Detox for meth addicts

A trial of compulsory detox treatment for meth addicts will be developed by the State Government as part of a plan to help families in crisis and tackle the methamphetamine scourge.

Premier Mark McGowan and Mental Health Minister Roger Cook said today the task force had listened to desperate families who wanted immediate help for loved ones which was not a prison cell or a hospital bed.

“Families are crying out for more support and we have a responsibility to do everything we possibly can to help them through the devastating impact of meth use on their sons and daughters,” Mr. McGowan said.

Mr. McGowan and Mr. Cook said while there were several legal issues to work through, they envisaged it would likely be a short-term crisis center in a health-style facility for situations where drug users required “stabilization and withdrawal services”.
