Most Protestants abstain from drink


At the dawn of Prohibition in the 1920s, the Federal Council of Churches nationwide believed the elimination of alcohol consumption would eradicate social evils.

Citing biblical verse from Corinthians, 1 Peter, 1 Timothy, Titus and Matthew, among others, drunkenness is condemned, while temperate, sober living is commanded.

The 18th Amendment of Prohibition was later overturned after the restrictive nature of alcohol production, consumption and sale was forced into the black market underground.
